The new HDMI 2.2 specification was announced today by HDMI Forum Inc and it doesn’t come as a simple evolution, but as a clear commitment to what’s to come. More than raising numbers, this revision redefines how high-resolution video is transmitted between screens, consoles, receivers and other devices. What once seemed reserved for professional environments is now beginning to take shape in the domestic sphere as well.
A giant leap in bandwidth: 96 Gbps to move 16K video at 60 FPS
One of the changes that really make a difference is the jump in bandwidth, which now goes up to 96 Gbps. This enhancement allows video signals as heavy as 16K to be moved at 60 FPS without the need for compression or intermediate tricks. Not so long ago, talking about something like this in a salon or even in a professional studio was little more than science fiction.
This new specification also supports formats such as 12K at 120Hz, 8K at 60Hz uncompressed, or 4K at 240Hz in full chroma (4:4:4), in both 10 and 12-bit color. In other words, not only is there a gain in resolution, but also in image accuracy and depth.
To ensure that devices actually meet these capabilities, the Ultra96 label has been created, which will identify products capable of working at 64, 80 or 96 Gbps. Of course, they will need the new Ultra96 cable, which is also certified within the official program.
Another important novelty is the LIP (Latency Indication Protocol) protocol, which improves the synchronization between image and sound, especially useful in configurations where receivers, soundbars and other elements are involved.
In short, HDMI 2.2 isn’t just a technical evolution: it’s a tool designed to shape the content of tomorrow.
